DIXFIELD — The Regional School Unit 10 board welcomed two new members Monday night and said one is needed to represent Mexico.
Former Rumford Selectman Jeremy Volkernick replaced Marcia Chaisson.
Richard Dyer of Hartford took over from Shawn White who chose not to seek another three-year term.
Monday’s meeting was the last one for longtime Mexico member Peter Zanoni. He declined to seek another term and no one sought his seat.
Superintendent Craig King said Mexico selectmen have a potential board member in mind and a parent of a Mountain Valley Middle School student is also interested.
He said Zanoni’s replacement will likely join the board at its July 27 meeting.
The board plans to meet only once in July.
The board also discussed a letter from the Canton Board of Selectmen asking that the district refrain from spending any money on changing uses of school buildings until Canton and other towns decide whether to withdraw from the district. Carthage, Peru and Dixfield are considering the move.
King said a letter will be directed to Canton selectmen stating the district’s special Buildings and Grounds Committee will continue to meet.
Board Chairman Bruce Ross said nothing will be “slid by,” but planning will continue.
The board presented several possible changes to the 10 school buildings at three public hearings this past winter. All of them included closing or making major renovations to one or more buildings.
King said earlier this year that more public hearings will be held in the fall.
The board also approved hiring former Mountain Valley High School graduate Travis Parent as an athletic trainer and physical education teacher. He has degrees from the University of Maine at Fort Kent and the University of Maine at Presque Isle.
