Androscoggin County has the youngest median age in the state, according to new data released Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau.
The median age in Androscoggin County is 40.9, followed by Penobscot, at 41.5 and Cumberland, at 42.3.
The county in Maine with the oldest median age is Piscataquis at 50.2, trailed by Lincoln at 50.1 and Hancock at 47.9.
Median age means that half of the population was younger and half was older.
These numbers reflect ages of Mainers as of July 1, 2014, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
Maine’s population by race was:
* Single-race white, 1.24 million;
* Black, 26,123;
* Asian, 21,286;
* American Indian or Alaskan native, 19,516; and
* Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders, 1,206.
