LEWISTON — Luke D. Jensen announced he intends to seek the at-large seat on the School Committee in November.
“We need a School Committee that is more responsive to parents in our city,” he said. “Parents are frustrated because they feel like their voices aren’t being heard.”
Jensen said he was motivated to run after listening to parents and teachers express concerns at committee meetings. He’s particularly concerned with the way proficiency-based learning has been applied at the high school.
“We have some tough problems ahead of us to solve, no doubt about it,” Jensen said. “By bringing new ideas to the table, we can respond to these challenges and develop a strong standard of education in our city. Each one of our youths deserves the best education we can give them.”
The 24-year-old city resident was born Lewiston and attended McMahon Elementary School and Lewiston High School, where he was class president in 2009.
He received his bachelor’s degree in international relations from Lynchburg College in 2013. He works for TD Bank and serves as an associate member of the Lewiston Historic Preservation Review Board.
Jensen served two terms as chairman of the Lewiston Youth Advisory Council and was a delegate for Lewiston’s successful All-America City bid in 2007.
All elected city offices, including the mayor, seven city councilors and eight School Committee members, will be elected in November.
Lewiston’s election cycle kicks off July 6. Candidates can begin circulating nomination petitions then and need to complete and return them to the City Clerk’s office by Sept. 4 to receive a spot on the ballot.
