LEWISTON — A 26-year-old rural health and scholarship advocate is seeking the Ward 3 City Council seat.

Isobel Moiles of Nichols Street will run for the seat held by Nate Libby.

Moiles grew up in Waldoboro. She worked around the state on rural health policy and on political campaigns. She works at the Maine Legislature.

Moiles serves on the Mitchell Institute’s Alumni Council, a scholarship organization founded by former U.S. Sen. George Mitchell that seeks to increase the likelihood that young people from every community in Maine go to college.

In a written statement, Moiles said her priorities are to strengthen Lewiston’s schools, encourage the growth and success of local businesses to help create good-paying jobs and support downtown revitalization.

“Lewiston is an energetic community of hardworking people and first-rate local businesses, both old and new,” Moiles wrote. “I am running for City Council because I want to contribute to the positive growth that is taking place in this city. I feel grateful to be part of this community, and I want to do my part to help make it an even better place to live, work and raise a family.”

All of Lewiston’s elected officers are up this November, including the mayor, seven city councilors and eight School Committee members.

The election cycle kicks off July 6. Candidates can begin circulating nomination petitions then and must complete them and hand them back to the City Clerk’s Office by Sept. 4 to reserve a spot on the ballot.

Mayoral candidates need to collect between 100 and 200 signatures from residents of Lewiston.

Council and School Committee candidates need to collect between 50 and 100 signatures. At-large School Committee candidates can collect signatures from residents living anywhere in the city. All other candidates need signatures from residents living in the ward they hope to represent.
