JAY — Police said suspects broke into a Farrington Road home late Sunday night, taped the homeowner’s hands behind his back and took his wallet, cellphone and collectible coins.

At least two, maybe three people forced their way through the front door and into the home of a 75-year-old man who was alone in the house, Jay police detective Michael Mejia said.

The homeowner was woken when two men entered his bedroom. They used packaging tape on his hands and made him lay face-down on the bed, he said.

They mentioned they had a gun, Mejia said. They also had something over their faces to hide their identity. A third suspect apparently waited in a vehicle and drove the suspects away, Mejia said.

After they left the home, the man was able to free his hands and called 911 at 11:59 p.m., Mejia said. The man was not injured during the incident.

The suspects took a large part of an extensive coin collection and the man’s wallet and a cellphone.

Police are working on a value estimate for the stolen items. They were able to collect some evidence and have sent it on to the Maine State Police Crime Lab. They also have some leads.

Jay police Cpl. Jeff Fournier responded to the call. Chief Richard Caton and Mejia assisted.

The homeowner had set up a game camera in the home and caught images of the suspects leaving, he said. Anyone who can identify the individuals or provide more information regarding the home invasion is asked to call the Jay Police Department at 207-897-6766.
