AUGUSTA — Gov. Paul LePage is demanding that all state hiring decisions be approved by his office, according to a state memo.

WMTW obtained the memo and a “Hiring Justification Form.”

The July 1 memo addressed to cabinet members says the Governor’s Office will review all vacant and newly created state positions. If any hiring steps have started, approval from the governor must be obtained before any job offer is made.

The “Hiring Justification Form” asks for details about the job and reason for the vacancy. Also on the form is a large space to explain the “need for the position, and identification of alternatives considered for accomplishing the Agency’s mission without additional hiring.” There is no place on the form asking for names.

WMTW also is reporting that last month LePage told them, “I do not micro-manage my people. I give them what I expect, and I move on.”

LePage’s office told WMTW’s Paul Merrill that the governor is doing its job and slimming down state government.
