SABATTUS — A memorial cross honoring fallen Lewiston police Officer Paul Simard was placed in Sabattus on Tuesday near the place where he lost his life.
Officer Jason Johnson organized the placement of the cross and a plaque that was to be added to Simard’s gravestone on Tuesday.
According to the Lewiston Police Department Facebook page, “The Lewiston Police Department (paused) to remember Officer Paul Simard who lost his life 57 years ago on July 7, 1958. Officer Simard was shot and killed after responding to a report of a domestic disturbance where shots were being fired. When Officer Simard arrived he confronted a 14-year-old female who shot and killed him. Officer Simard was survived by his wife and two daughters.”
Pauline Simard McCarthy posted her gratitude to the Lewiston PD and to all who contributed to making the memorial a reality.
Another memorial honoring Simard serves as a “cornerstone” for the Simard-Payne Law Enforcement Memorial Park, where city events take place.
