LEWISTON — On Wednesday, a world finalist and professional K-9 flying disc performer will wow audiences with a demonstration by his high-flying dogs at Simard-Payne Memorial Park.

Mike Piazza of Nahant, Mass., has 15 years of experience as a K-9 flying disc performer. He’ll show off his and his dogs’ talent as they jump, twist and flip chasing flying discs.

The performance begins at 10 a.m. It is part of the summer “Wednesdays in the Park” offered by the city recreation departments of Lewiston and Auburn.

Piazza started competing 18 years ago and now travels around the Northeast as a performer. He has four border collies in the show, ranging in age from 1 to 11 years. Their names are Biscuit, Bullet, Maui and Chaos.

Border collies “are an intelligent breed and athletic,” Piazza said last week. To be flying disc performers, “the dogs need a long snout and a long nose,” which border collies have. The dogs are also eager to learn and work, Piazza said.

Training a dog takes work every day. “You have to find out each dog’s strength and build upon that,” Piazza said. “It’s fun.” Typically in his show he calls on a few children to help in the act.

The act is youth and family friendly. Typically, the show lasts 30 to 40 minutes and is aided with the use of a sound system.

Piazza has performed for audiences at National Football League games, National Basketball Association games, minor league baseball games, on television channels ESPN and Animal Planet, during halftime at college sporting events, for television commercials, at fairs, pet expos, day camps and more.

The rain location for Wednesdays in the Park events, held every other week throughout the summer, is the Lewiston Armory on Central Avenue.

Other upcoming events:

July 29: The Veayo Twins at Festival Plaza in Auburn. The twins present anti-bullying messages through music; the twins have speech issues but music takes it away.
