HOULTON, Maine — When Carl Lord Jr. first heard that his nephew, Anthony Lord, was allegedly involved in a violent shooting rampage that led to the death of two people and injuries to four others, he was shocked and devastated, even though he had never been close to the 35-year-old accused killer.

In fact, the Houlton resident said during an interview at his home Sunday, the last time he and his wife, Priscilla Lord, actively saw Lord was during his childhood. The loss of contact was so great that when Anthony Lord’s 6-month-old son, Larry Earl Lord, died on May 7 and Carl and Priscilla Lord attended the boy’s funeral, “someone had to point Anthony out to us,” the couple said.

But it was to Carl Lord Jr.’s home on the North Road that Lord surrendered after an intense 18-hour manhunt involving multiple law enforcement agencies in northern Penobscot and southern Aroostook counties.

Lord, who has a long criminal history and is a lifetime registrant of the Maine Sex Offender Registry, was arrested 2:30 p.m. Friday at his uncle’s home by officers from Houlton Police Department and Maine State Police. Lord was charged with two counts of murder and kidnapping, and may face other charges, Maine State Police Lt. Sean Hashey said after his arrest.

The crime spree was extensive. Lord is accused of lighting a barn on fire Thursday night at the home of Kim Irish, 55, on the Aroostook Road in Benedicta. He then made his way to nearby Silver Ridge Township and attacked Kary Mayo, who was tied to a chair and beaten, according to police. Guns and a truck were stolen during the 4:40 a.m. break-in.

Katie Sell, a Silver Ridge resident, told the Bangor Daily News on Saturday that her neighbor called 911 for Mayo at this point, telling them he had been hit over the head multiple times with a hammer.

A short time later in Benedicta, Kyle Hewitt, 25, and Kim Irish were shot. Irish was wounded, police said, and Hewitt succumbed to his wounds a few hours later after being flown to a medical facility by a LifeFlight helicopter. Hewitt’s girlfriend, Brittany Irish, 21, was kidnapped. Police said that Lord knew Irish.

Her father, Rick Irish, said early Sunday evening that he didn’t want to talk yet about how Lord knew the family, but he added, “He’s been stalking Brittany for six years, I can tell you that.”

The entire Irish family is still in shock by Lord’s shooting, kidnapping and death spree and they are grief-stricken by the death of Hewitt, he said.

“We’re doing and dealing, trying to do the best we can,” Rick Irish said.

His wife, Kim Irish, was released from the hospital late on Friday and “is doing fine” and his daughter was released when Lord was captured.

“She’s doing good, so far,” Rick Irish said of his daughter.

Kim Irish said Sunday that the family had known Hewitt for about four years and that he was on the couch asleep when Lord shot him.

Hewitt worked at the Bangor Best Buy, which has offered grief counseling for his co-workers.

“We’re devastated with the news of Kyle’s death,” Carly Charlson, Best Buy spokeswoman, said in a Saturday email. “Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this incredibly difficult time.”

Grief counseling was available for Hewitt’s fellow employees, she said by phone.

Brittany Irish’s sister, Nicole, set up a GoFundMe account to raise money for Hewitt’s funeral and medical expenses for her family.

Another victim, Carlton Eddy, 55, suffered a shoulder wound after a side window to his vehicle was shot out as he turned around in the driveway of the Irish home, around the time the kidnapping was happening. Eddy went to the home to see the damage from the barn fire that occurred the night before.

Lord was involved in a high speed chase involving East Millinocket Police, with him shooting at the officer, then shortly afterward, at 6:20 a.m., he pulled into a woodlot on Winn Road in Lee and shot Kevin Tozier, 58, and Clayton McCarthy, 54, police said. Tozier died from his wounds. Lord then took McCarthy’s pulp truck.

The surviving gunshot victims were treated for their wounds and “are expected to survive,” Stephen McCausland, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman, said Friday. Updates about the conditions of the other three surviving victims were not available Sunday.

The motive is still being investigated.

On Sunday, Lord said that he believes his nephew surrendered at his home because he saw his mother’s vehicle in the yard.

Lord said that he is also glad that he chose to surrender there.

“If he did it somewhere else, I don’t know if it would have turned out as well,” he added.

“He came up to me and pointed the weapon up in the air, not at me or anyone,” he said. “He pressed the button to eject the clip, took the bullets out and hugged his mom. Then he went back to his truck and handed me the knife that he was carrying and left to go smoke a cigarette. I checked the truck, too, to make sure there were no other weapons in there. Throughout his entire time here, he never spoke a word to me.”

Lord has a home monitoring system on his property and shared the video of Lord’s arrival and arrest with a reporter Sunday. It supported the details of what he described.

Brittany Irish was also pictured arriving in a white truck with Lord.

She remained several feet from him during the time it took police to get to Lord’s home, and at one point was pictured crying while making a phone call.

Lord said that the family is “devastated” for the victims and for the others affected by the tragedy. He also said he was angered by some of the news reports saying that his nephew had come inside his home, been tackled by law enforcement or that “people living in Houlton should sort of expect this, because anything can happen living in Houlton.’”

“That really upset me,” he said. “You know, this is something that we did not ask for, just like the victims. This crime came to us.”

Lord said Sunday that he could not speculate on a motive for the crime.

“Something made him go off the deep end,” he said. “I just don’t know what.”

Maine State Police also continue to investigate the death of Lord’s 6-month-old son, who was taken to the hospital on May 5 and died two days later on May 7. State police investigate all infant deaths.

Lord, who is being held at the Aroostook County Jail in Houlton, is scheduled to make his first appearance before a judge at 11:30 a.m. Monday in Houlton.
