MEXICO — The Board of Selectmen on Tuesday night unanimously voted to temporarily appoint of Charles Lever to fill a vacancy on the Regional School Unit 10 board of directors.
Lever, a retired longtime educator and former principal of the middle school in Mexico, volunteered his services after no one ran for the three-year post of Mexico representative after Peter Zanoni chose not to seek re-election.
Voters wrote-in several names at the June referendum, but nothing conclusive.
Town Manager John Madigan said Lever agreed to serve until the next referendum in November.
“We’re going to need someone to come forward for the school board (in November),” he noted.
In other business, Madigan said the owner of the Mexico Plaza building on Main Street, who also owns similar buildings in Skowhegan and Sanford, sent a flyer to the town office indicating that he was attempting to sell the facility.
Madigan said the plaza owner was wondering if the town might be interested in it.
Selectmen agreed that they were not interested. However, Madigan said he noted Jim Rinaldo, economic developer for the River Valley Growth Council, about the sales effort.
The plaza is home to a Family Dollar store and three empty storefronts that are up for lease.
Businessman Todd Wardwell, who does work for the plaza, said the Family Dollar has a 10-year lease there.
The Mexico Bureau of Motor Vehicles used to lease one of the buildings in the plaza, but in 2014, finding the plaza is located in the Androscoggin River flood zone, the state decided to move the business to a building in Rumford.
Selectmen authorized Madigan to sign the certification of last year’s Local Road Assistance Program. Doing so assures the town’s participation in this year’s program, which Madigan said will be $23,304 (based on $600 a lane mile). That is $300 more than last year.
Selectmen approved a measure to accept one selectman’s signature on the payroll warrant to be able to distribute checks to employees.
Initially, that proposal was going to be during the summer months when selectmen meet just once a month, but they approved Selectman Andy Dupuis’ motion to make that year-round.
Madigan noted that what doesn’t change is that the signatures of three selectmen are still required on regular bills, and all selectmen must sign the town warrants.
