LISBON — A funnel cloud passed through Lisbon near Crest Avenue at about 5 p.m. Monday but never touched the ground, the National Weather Service confirmed Tuesday.

The cloud, which appears “almost like a comma hanging down from a cloud,” had the potential to become a tornado, but that did not happen Monday, according to meteorologist Nikki Becker of the weather service’s Gray station.

Funnel clouds are created following showers or thunderstorms, she said.

Meteorologists at the Gray station could not remember the last time a tornado hit Maine, but Becker said the state usually sees two a year.
