RUMFORD — Selectmen on Thursday approved a bid to repair bathrooms burned July 24 at the Hosmer Field complex.

The board voted 5-0 to approve a bid from Complete and Affordable Construction Excavation LLC of Rumford for $9,875.

Parks Superintendent Mike Mills asked that the work not be done “until all the bids, the plumbing and everything, are in, and we see what the insurance company is going to give us.”

Damage to the 20-by-40-foot building will include removing the ceiling, sanding and painting the walls and replacing two urinals.

Mills said there was more than $6,000 damage in the fire, which was ruled an arson. The bill from Service Master for the cleanup was over $4,500, he said.

Along with the repairs, Mills said the Parks Department wants to upgrade the bathrooms, which were constructed in the 1950s. Any cost above and beyond the insurance will come from the department’s capital plan.

From now until after the repairs are made, people at the football field can use several portable toilets.

In other business, John Madigan, town manager of Rumford and Mexico, invited the selectmen to attend Mexico’s Night of Appreciation next month. Local baseball players Dylan Desroches and Cameron Godbois, who were on the Tri-County Babe Ruth team that reached the finals of the World Series for 13-year-olds, will be recognized.

Board members agreed it was a good idea.

Madigan read a letter from Western Maine Transportation seeking a letter of support for it to go to the county to request funding instead of to the individual towns they serve.

“They need a certain amount of funding in order to secure state and federal matching funds,” Madigan said.

The board will take action on the letter at its next meeting.
