FALMOUTH — A man driving a motorcycle at a high rate of speed crashed and died early Saturday, according to Maine State Police spokesman Stephen McCausland.
The driver was identifed as Alexander Small, 21, of Richmond.
State police in Gray received a call at about 12:10 a.m. Saturday of a motorcycle crash on Interstate 295 North near Mile 11. Witnesses observed the male operator, later identified as Small, on a Yamaha motorcycle operating erratically at a high rate of speed in and out of traffic.
Small came upon a Honda Pilot in the travel lane. He was unable to slow down to avoid hitting the rear bumper. Small lost control and both he and the motorcycle struck the guardrail.
The Honda Pilot was driven by Cary Phoenix, 40. Passengers were Luke Rioux, 35, and two small children, all of Portland.
Alcohol was not a factor with Phoenix, police said. Blood results are pending for Small.
There are no charges pending for Phoenix, police said. Both evidence at the scene and witness statements appear to show Small’s operation as the cause of the crash.
