AUBURN — Educators, past and present, are invited to visit the Woman’s Literary Union headquarters at Foss Mansion, 19 Elm St., Auburn, from 4-6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10.

This year’s WLU Meet and Greet is to say “thank you” to area teachers and educators for all they do to make the community special.

The Woman’s Literary Union has a history of supporting education in the community. As early as 1898, WLU members started a successful movement to add kindergarten to the public school systems in Lewiston and Auburn. In 1905, WLU members led a successful effort to add domestic science and manual training to the public school curriculum by holding a round table discussion with educators and school superintendents.

In the early 1900s, WLU established public playgrounds in Lewiston and Auburn by purchasing playground equipment with funds they had raised. Club members maintained the playgrounds and ran recreation programs for local children for years before Lewiston and Auburn recreation departments took over.

The mission of the Woman’s Literary Union is to further the intellectual, cultural and educational advancement of its members and the community. The community, family and friends are invited to many upcoming special events including the annual Christmas Open House and Spring Doll Tea, and the newest activity — a Halloween party especially for youngsters up to 12 years old.

There will be a general membership business meeting at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 10, for WLU members only. Members are reminded to be sure their dues are current. New members, including men, are welcome to join WLU membership.
