NORWAY — Fire of undetermined origin destroyed a vacant mobile home at 21 McKay Road late Wednesday night, Fire Chief Dennis Yates said. There were no injuries.
Firefighters from Norway, Paris, Oxford and Waterford responded to the 11:12 p.m. call and found the 14- by 72-foot home engulfed in flames. It was about three-quarters collapsed when they arrived, the chief said.
The scene was about 6 miles from the closest fire station.
“A neighbor heard a noise and looked out and saw a glow. He realized it was a fire and called the Fire Department,” Yates said.
The home had been vacant for about six months and had electrical service, he said.
An investigator from the state Fire Marshal’s Office was at the scene Thursday morning to try to determine the cause, but because of the extensive damage, Yates said, that may prove to be a difficult task.
On Thursday, Yates was attempting to locate the owner of the property.
“I’m not 100 percent (sure) who owns the building,” he said. “A guy owned it and then people were renting it with an option to buy, or something like that. I’m not sure if there is insurance, but I’d doubt very much if there was.”
PACE Paramedic Service also responded, and emergency crews left the scene at approximately 2:30 a.m.
