SALEM — Mt. Abram’s offense has been sluggish this season with sophomore Lindsay Huff scoring three of the Roadrunner’s four goals heading into Monday’s Mountain Valley Conference girls’ soccer game with Dirigo.
Huff responded to coach Marc Keller’s call for more production in attack, scoring three goals in a 3-0 win over Dirigo, at Potter’s Pitch.
“My teammates were hitting really good passes, today,” Huff, who managed eight of the Roadrunners, 18 shots, said. “They were hitting balls over the top and on the ground that I could run onto.”
Huff notched her first goal on a nice through pass from midfielder Risa Marble at 32:03 of the first half. Collecting the ball at the 11 yard line, Huff slammed home a hard shot into the top left corner for a 1-0 lead.
“We’ve been working on getting short passes through the defense,” Keller said. “We have a lot of speed up front and we are trying to take advantage of that.”
Marble and teammate Marya Beedy were impressive in the midfield, controlling play while keeping pressure on Dirigo’s defense with their skillful passes.
Four minutes after her first goal, Huff was back at it again from the right side of the penalty area. Dirigo goalkeeper, Mariah Lafleur made a sterling effort to turn the shot over the cross bar but the ball squeezed under the bar for a 2-0 Mt. Abram advantage.
Although being out shot 18-3, Dirigo coach Kevin Prevost was encouraged by the Cougars play throughout, especially that of the freshman who logged quality minutes.
“Our younger players are stepping up and playing hard,” Prevost, in his first-year, said. “We are using a lot of freshmen. Hopefully it will carry over to next year.”
Huff scored her third goal, at 29:59 of the second half, grabbing a deflected shot in front of the goal. Letting the ball roll across her body, Huff tucked it calmly into the lower right corner for a 3-0 lead.
“I was looking for the hat trick,” Huff said. “I really wanted to get it and coach Keller told me to be patient, that it would come if I just continued to play my game.”
For Mt. Abram (1-3-1) the win was critical, helping keep the Roadrunners in contention for one of the final playoff spots in Class C South, while Dirigo dipped to 0-6-0 with the loss.
