DIXFIELD — To say Dirigo is on serious roll would be an understatement.
The Cougars came out aggressively and their crisp passing was done with a fruitful purpose that produced a trio of goals in the first half at Harlow Park on Monday.
Sabrina Daoud and Lauren Henderson each scored in a 48-second span and the defense held firm in a 3-1 win over Mountain Valley. It’s the second-straight year that Dirigo has recorded a season sweep.
“Dirigo players are very fast and there passing is really good,” said Mountain Valley coach Melissa Forbes, who fell to 6-4. “We just got caught chasing the ball.”
Dirigo (9-1) controlled play off the opening tap and immediately put pressure on the defense. This eventually paid off when Daoud blasted a backhand past Falcon goalie Aylssa Akers (13 saves) with 17:27 left in the first half. The play materialized on the right side and Alexa Varum hit a pass that deflected off a Falcon defender and continued across.
The Cougars advanced the ball right back in to the circle and freshman Ashley Perreault tapped a pass over to Henderson, who was unmarked o the left post.
“On all of our scores, we really focused on passing,” Emma Lueders said, regarding the Cougars’ strategy. “All the passes are done in order to get the team involved. A pass is just as good as an assist.”
Dirigo fullbacks Katelyn Radcliffe and Haley Turner stepped up consistently allowing midfielders Olivia Noyes, Lueders and Katetlyn Olsen advanced the ball in to the offensive zone. This had Falcon defenders Makayla Burgess, Brooke Carrier and sweeper Liza White packing it in.
“We went to the ball today,” Dirigo coach Gretchen Errington said. ”We had worked hard on Saturday in practice on getting passes off. Those passes were big and it helped the players’ endurance because they were not having to chase after balls.”
The Cougars’ Desirae Tracy-Rackliff scored with 6:26 left in the first half. Mountain Valley regrouped during halftime and Lexi Duguay and Maddie Kaubry’s each had quality shots on goal. On a third straight penalty corner, Marissa Crosby passed the ball in to Duguay who one-timed it past Dirigo goalie Morgan Morrow (six saves), with 17:25 remaining in the game.
”We needed more support,” Forbes said. ”The players need to anticipate where the passes are going and react. It may have been a Mountain Valley-Dirigo thing, with a big crowd, and when Dirigo scored, the girls’ nerves didn’t allow them to use the thing’s they use in practices.”
