LISBON FALLS — It was a back-and-forth Class C South matchup between Lisbon and St. Dominic Academy on Monday, with the Saints prevailing with a 2-0 win in field hockey.

St. Dom’s improved to 8-4, while the Greyhounds fell to 3-9.

“We were flat,” Lisbon coach Julie Petrie said. “And we got flatter when they scored, that’s about it.”

Neither team was able to get anything going offensively in the first half, with each team getting just one shot on goal. The Saints held a 5-3 advantage in penalty corners, but both teams couldn’t convert on any of them.

Lisbon had a penalty corner at the 25-minute mark, but Bree Daigle’s attempt went wide of the net.

“Honestly, I just don’t think we played well,” Petrie said. “We played an OK first half, but honestly we were flat, and the girls just didn’t show up to play today, and they did, and they finished and beat us to the ball and outplayed us.”

St. Dom’s had three penalty corners in four minutes, but they failed to make anything of them. Lisbon countered with its own opportunity with 18 minutes left in the first half, but a shot by Mallory Fairbanks went wide. Later, with just 40 seconds left, St. Dom’s had a chance with traffic in front of the goal and the shot attempt squeezed through the defenders, but missed just wide of the cage.

“We knew coming in that they’re (ranked) number eight, but they don’t play like a number eight team, they can beat anybody come playoffs,” Saints coach Brian Kay said of the ‘Hounds. “We knew their forwards were the difference when they beat us at home so we had to contain them.”

St. Dom’s started off the second half with a solid shot on goal in the first 30 seconds that was turned away by Lisbon goalkeeper Mikaylia Harden. Just under four minutes later, the Saints had another good look, but Harden turned away that attempt as well. Harden finished with three saves.

The Saints finally broke the tie with 21:13 remaining when Hannah Trottier-Braun netted a pass from Kylie Leavitt.

“If you can score that first goal, that’s the key in field hockey,” Kay said. “It just changes the whole momentum of the game.”

St. Dom’s Olivia Chase put in the final goal with 16 minutes remaining off a nice pass from Erin LaChance.

“We worked really well as a team,” Chase said. “You could see that after Hannah got our first goal the whole game changed.”

The Greyhounds had three penalty corners in the second half, two with seven minutes remaining but never had much success offensively.

“We need to communicate better,” Petrie said. “We all need to be on the same unit, I think some people are showing up to play, but I don’t know why but we just haven’t really clicked consistently enough as a team to pull off close games.”

Lisbon had another penalty corner with three minutes remaining to cut into the lead, but the shot went wide.

“We wanted to keep second place for playoffs,” Chase said. “We came out with a lot of intensity this time.”

St. Dom’s goalkeeper Abby Slonina had four saves in goal and the Saints had the edge in penalty corners, 8-6.

The Greyhounds are on the road against Winthrop on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
