FARMINGTON — A formidable Mt. Blue rally in the final minutes of the game fell just short, leaving Camden Hills owning a 3-2 win in a Class A North girls’ soccer game Tuesday afternoon on Caldwell Field.

Unbeaten and top ranked Camden Hills (10-0-1) watched as Mt. Blue (4-6-1) rallied from a 3-1 deficit to narrowly missing a game-tying goal as time expired. Eryn Doiron’s swerving shot from outside the penalty area, hit just outside the top right cross bar, as the buzzer rang to end the game.

“The game could have ended 3-1, but we never gave up,” Mt. Blue coach Fred Conlogue said. “We gave an outstanding effort in the final 15 minutes.”

Camden Hills took a 3-1 lead with 23:05 remaining when winger Emma Gutheinz scored on a diagonal run from the outside, beating her defender and meeting the ball at the far post for the eventual game winner.

With the game seemingly slipping away, Mt. Blue mounted a tenacious rally that began when Doiron picked up a free ball on the left side of the goal area and pounded in a left footed shot, at 17:19, to cut the Windjammers lead to 3-2.

From that moment the Cougars were relentless, carrying play into the Windjammers’ end only to be denied the tying goal on several occasions. Mt. Blue owned an 8-1 corner kick advantage in the second half.

In addition to Doiron’s last-second effort, Ace Provencher managed to elude the Windjammer defense on a Caitlin Kane free kick, sending a ground ball just wide of the left post with 10 minutes remaining in the game.

“We didn’t come into the season thinking we would be the top ranked team,” Camden Hills coach Meredith Messer said of the Windjammers, who are playing their first season in Class A. “It’s a challenge every time we take the field, teams get excited to play the No. 1 team.”

Doiron, who gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead 12 minutes into the game, tied the Mt. Blue all-time career scoring mark scoring with her two goals. Doiron has 44 career goals, tying the mark of former Mt. Blue standout Ashli Spear (1987-90).

Eliza Roy scored her first of two goals to knot the game 1-1 with 7:55 left in the first half. Roy redirected a free kick from teammate Charlotte Messer into the net, evading a host of Mt. Blue defenders at the 5-yard line.

Roy gave the Windjammers the lead, slicing a ball off the left post that caromed across the goal mouth, settling into the netting on the right side for a 2-1 advantage 14 minutes into the second half.

Camden Hills finished the game with a 20-11 shot advantage, and Windjammer goalkeeper Jana Speiker made four saves. Mt. Blue counterpart Addie Schanz finished the game with 11 stops.
