OXFORD — A couple and their two children were left homeless after fire damaged their single-story home at 176 Rabbit Valley Road next to Hogan Pond late Wednesday morning.
Homeowner Timothy Gordon was believed to have been home when fire broke out just before 11:30 a.m. His wife, Joni, who was at work, arrived later.
A dog and tank of fish were rescued by firefighters.
Oxford Fire Chief Wayne Jones said he believes the fire broke out beneath the three-bedroom home. There was fire damage in the basement and first floor and extensive smoke damage. Firefighters cut a hole in the metal roof to vent the smoke.
Crews from Oxford, Mechanic Falls, Poland, Norway, Paris, Hebron, Otisfield, and West Paris responded to the scene.
A neighbor, Ray White, said he was driving on King Street when he saw the firetrucks and followed them. “It was smoking pretty badly when I got here,” he said.
The state Fire Marshal’s Office was called to investigate the cause.
According to the American Red Cross, disaster relief workers will meet with the family and provide financial assistance for food, clothing and emergency shelter.
