LIVERMORE FALLS — A lockdown drill at schools in Regional School Unit 73 this week showed officials strengths and weaknesses in the plan, Transportation/Maintenance Director Kenneth Vining told directors Thursday night.
“Some things went right, some went wrong,” Vining said.
It was the first lockdown drill of the year for elementary schools in Jay and Livermore, and the middle and high schools in Jay. All area emergency organizations responded, including fire departments, the Maine State Police and other law enforcement agencies.
Vining said a debriefing was held after Wednesday’s drill, which did not include an active shooter scenario. All doors — exterior and interior — were locked.
In other matters, the board awarded an $85,000 snowplowing contract to Jean Castonguay Logging and Excavation of Livermore Falls. It’s the same amount as the past several years.
Also on Thursday:
* Board members Denise Rodzen, Cynthia Young, Shari Ouellette and Jackie Knight will serve on a scholarship committee honoring former board member Diane Gould, who died in a car accident this year.
* Technology Director Craig Suttie said the district received $115 per student from the E-Rate program to purchase additional technology. The program provides discounted telecommunications, Internet access and internal connections to eligible schools and libraries.
* Suttie said the first of four sessions to assist students and parents with school-issued laptop computers will be held Oct. 29.
* A moment of silence was held for those from the El Faro cargo ship lost in the Bahamas last week. Four crew members were from Maine.
The next board meeting is at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 22.
