TURNER — Senior Tom Petit rocketed a corner kick from Seth Ramser into the far corner of the net with just under 10 minutes remaining in regulation to lift Leavitt to a 1-0 victory over Spruce Mountain in boys’ soccer action Saturday evening.
The Phoenix (0-11) battled hard to try to break through. But Leavitt managed to prevail on Seniors Night with the conversion from Petit.
Lucas Perry made a big save for the Hornets (4-6-2) on a direct kick earlier in the game to keep it scoreless and provide Petit the fateful opportunity.
Goalie Will Brenner made 14 saves for Spruce Mountain, while goalie Lucas Perry prevented four shots to earn the win in net for Leavitt.
Girls’ soccer
Messalonskee 3, Lewiston 2
LEWISTON — Fern Caulkins converted a free kick from McKenna Brodeur for the game-winning goal in the second overtime as Messalonskee clipped Lewiston 3-2 in girls’ soccer action Saturday afternoon.
The Blue Devils (5-6-1) found the back of the cage twice before the Eagles (9-2-1) managed to cut that lead in half just before the break. Brodeur complimented Caulkins first half goal early in the second half to even the game at 2-2 through regulation.
Goalie Kelsey St. Cyr made nine saves for Lewiston, while goalie Sarah Van Der Karr turned back seven to earn the win in net for Messalonskee.
Buckfield 1, GPC 0
PORTLAND — Tabea Vatthauer scored the game’s lone goal to lift Buckfield to a 1-0 triumph over Greater Portland Christian in girls’ soccer action Saturday afternoon.
The Bucks (9-3) were strong on offense, outpacing the Lions 18-1 in shots.
Goalie Grace MacDougall made nine saves for Greater Portland Christian, while Bri Damon needed just one save to earn the win in net for Buckfield.
College field hockey
UMF 2, Thomas College 1
FARMINGTON — Mara Balboni scored the game-winning goal with two minutes remaining to lead the University of Maine at Farmington to a 2-1 victory over Thomas College in NAC field hockey action Saturday afternoon.
The first half was a defensive showdown with only two total shots. Taylor Bergeron put the Terriers (6-7) on the board first six minutes into the final frame.
The Beavers 96-3) bounced back near the midpoint of the second half when Emma Martineau of Greene evened the score. Emmah Spahr passed through the Terrier’s defense and Martineau tapped the shot for her second goal of the season.
Women’s soccer
Castleton 6, UMF 1
FARMINGTON — Castleton University produced four first-half goals en route to a 6-1 win over the University of Maine at Farmington in NAC women’s soccer action Saturday afternoon.
Following a lead off goal by the Castleton, the Beavers (3-8-1) answered back with a tally from Lydia Roy. Ashley Gleason sent a nice pass through the Spartans (7-6) defense and Roy lined a shot into the left side of the net.
Sam Hatch and Kiana Thompson each spent a half in net for Farmington, making four saves apiece.
Bates 4, Connecticut 3
NEW LONDON, Conn. — Senior forward Leah Humes scored two goals minutes apart in the second half to lift Bates College to a 4-3 victory over Connecticut College in women’s soccer action Saturday afternoon.
Humes tied the game at three with 3:41 remaining in regulation for the Bobcats (5-4-2). Olivia Amdur delivered a long cross from the left side, and Humes redirected the ball into the net with a header.
Just 2:06 later, Amdur delivered the entry pass from almost the same spot on the left side. Humes was able to chip it in to put Bates on top for good.
Men’s soccer
Castleton 3, UMF 0
FARMINGTON — The University of Maine at Farmington battled Castleton University a bit tougher than Castleton has experienced lately, despite dropping a 3-0 matchup in NAC men’s soccer action Saturday afternoon.
The Spartans (9-3-1), who sit atop of the conference, took the lead in the 15th minute when Solo Felekeni dished a pass through the Beavers’ defense and Jake Tietgens lined a shot into the back of the cage.
Late in the second half, Tayoung Nuyepga made a critical defensive save for the Beavers (3-6-2) to keep the game locked at 2-0.
When Thomas Kirk got past UMF keeper Matt Wilson, Kirk took a shot on the far right of the goal and Nuyepga came in at the last moment to deflect it away.
Wilson saved three shots in the game as the Beavers only allowed six shots on goal.
Connecticut 1, Bates 0
NEW LONDON, Conn. — Mark Leon scored in the 19th minute to lead Connecticut College to a 1-0 victory over Bates College in men’s soccer action Saturday afternoon.
Leon corraled a loose ball in the box at the 6-yard line and rifled home his team-leading sixth goal of the season for the Camels (8-2-1).
The Bobcats (6-3-1) had their best chance in the 75th minute when senior Sean Moyo unloaded a blast from 25 yards out. But, Austin DaCunha was able to elevate to make the tip save that sent the ball out of play.
Senior Sam Polito recorded four saves in the setback for Bates.
Football
Tufts 43, Bowdoin 24
MEDFORD, Mass. — Junior Chance Brady rushed for 123 yards and three touchdowns on 14 carries at Tufts secured a 43-24 victory over Bowdoin College Saturday afternoon.
The Polar Bears (0-3) gained 381 of their 411 total yards through the air. A pair of recievers finished with over 130 yards each as sophomore Nick Vaillia caught eight passes for 158 yards and a touchdown, and senior Daniel Barone made seven receptions for 135 yards and a touchdown.
The Jumbo (3-0) defense contributed to the early momentum when sophomore defensive lineman Micah Adickes intercepted a pass on Bowdoin’s fourth play from scrimmage. Tufts took a 14-0 just 5:36 into the game.

Men’s cross country
UMF claims Runnin’ Monks Crown
STANDISH — The University of Maine at Farmington men’s cross country team earned its first victory since 2007 behind Robert Hollis’ first place finish at the St. Joseph’s runnin’ Monks Invitational on Saturday. Hollis, who is from Auburn, won the crown by crossing the line at 27:33 and averaged a 5:33 mile. The sophomore beat out St. Joe’s Lucas Fisher by nearly a minute for the top spot.
The Beavers earned the top team honors by placing all five scorers in the top 20 individually.
