LEWISTON — A 31-year-old man died Tuesday after falling from a commercial trash truck near 43 Gina St., police said.
Mark Ehrenwald of 197 Pine St. in Lewiston was found unresponsive in the street just before noon. He was part of a four-man crew working on a Pine Tree Waste truck. Rescuers started CPR at the scene but were not able to revive him, according to police.
Joe Fusco, a spokesman for Casella Waste Systems, the parent company of Pine Tree Waste, said Ehrenwald was not an employee of the company but was hired by a local temporary employment agency.
“What we do know is our driver saw him get off the back of the truck and was waiting for him to get back on, and when he didn’t get back on our driver got out of the truck, went around the back and saw him on the ground,” Fusco said. “While he was not an employee of ours, we are obviously still concerned for that person and his family.”
Lt. Michael McGonagle, a spokesman for the Lewiston Police Department, said police had not determined how Ehrenwald died.
“We don’t know if he had a medical condition or there was some sort of an accident with him coming off the truck. It’s unknown at this time and remains under investigation,” McGonagle said. “It doesn’t appear there is anything suspicious; the vehicle was not traveling at a high rate of speed.”
Police said the trash collection crew was driving its regular route on Gina Street when the driver pulled in front of a house and looked in the rearview mirror and saw Ehrenwald, who had previously been riding on the back of the truck, in the middle of the road.
Paramedics from United Ambulance and firefighters from Lewiston worked for about 30 minutes trying to resuscitate Ehrenwald inside one of two ambulances at the scene. Also responding was a detective for the Lewiston Police Department.
McGonagle said the detective’s review is a standard protocol for any unusual death. He said more details may come as the result of an autopsy that would be conducted by the Office of the State Medical Examiner.
Gina Street is part of the city’s regular Tuesday trash collection route. Pine Tree Waste in Mechanic Falls holds the contract for this route.
Neighbors at the scene told the Sun Journal they did not witness the incident.
