1928 – 2015
Caroline Louise (Douglas) Mayo, died Thursday, Oct. 29, at her home in Wilton surrounded by her loving family.
Caroline was born on July 14, 1928, a daughter of Charles A. and Muriel J. (Hamlin) Douglas at Willow View Farm in East Wilton. Caroline resided with her family at the farm and graduated from Wilton Academy in 1946. She married David H. Mayo on June 7, 1946, at the East Wilton Union Church. They built a house not far from the farm that Caroline was born and raised their family. Caroline worked at G.H. Bass Co. in Wilton for 43 years.
Caroline was an expert tailor and seamstress who made her family’s clothing and completed alterations. Additionally, she was a 50-year member of an Extension Homemakers group and advanced to write the “Homemakers Creed” for the State Association. Caroline was also a member of the Wilton Historical Society. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and and became “Nana” to many other neighborhood kids. Caroline was a gentle and kind person who was well loved by everyone, she will be missed.
Caroline is survived by her children, Camilla Jordan of West Farmington, Douglas Mayo and his wife, Linda Tracy, of Keyport, N.J., and Cathy Melvin and her husband, Michael, of East Madison; granddaughters, Charity Jordan of Avon and Faith Michaud and her husband, John, of Wilton; two great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; siblings, Dorothy Clemens and her husband, James, of Old Orchard Beach and Willard Douglas and his wife, Joan, of Wilton; and many nieces, nephews and friends; and her beloved adopted dogs, Trouble and Sassy.
Caroline was predeceased by her husband; a sister, Inez Wheeler and her husband, Donald; and a daughter-in-law, Harriett Mayo.
Caroline’s family would like to thank Dr. Goss and Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice for their care as well as Jennifer Chick for being Caroline’s caregiver.
