OXFORD — Two teenagers suffered minor injuries on Halloween after being struck by a vehicle along the shoulder of Pottle Road while out trick-or-treating.
A group of four costumed teens were walking in pairs, one behind the other, in a dark area of Pottle Road, where the speed limit is 25 mph, at around 6:30 p.m.
At the same time, Lee Richardson, 88, of Oxford was traveling west on Pottle Road in his 1996 Chevy Cavalier, while another vehicle approached him from the east. The driver of the eastbound vehicle noticed the teens and stopped in the road to allow Richardson to pass.
However, Richardson reported to police that the lights from the oncoming vehicle made it so he was unable to see the group of kids.
Oxford police Chief Jonathan Tibbetts said as Richardson was passing, he grazed 15-year-old Shawn Robinson of South Paris who was walking closest to the road with the corner of the right front bumper, pushing the boy into 16-year-old Victoria Smedley of Oxford who was walking next to him.
Oxford Fire and Rescue responded to the scene and transported the teens to Stephens Memorial Hospital where they were both treated and released. The boy received stitches for cuts on his head, and the girl complained of hip pain from the incident.
Tibbetts declined to release the names of the injured teens.
Richardson stopped immediately when he realized what had happened, Tibbetts said.
Lt. Michael Ward and officer Mike Fitzmorris investigated the accident.
“We don’t expect to have any charges,” said Tibbetts. “It was a dark area, dark clothing.”
Otherwise, Tibbetts said Halloween passed without serious incident or mischievous activity in Oxford.
“We had some pumpkin smashing, but that happens every year,” said Tibbetts.
