FRYEBURG – A local woman escaped with minor injuries Wednesday afternoon when she was struck by a car while crossing Portland Street, police said.

Police said the 23-year-old woman was crossing the road near Bea’s Cafe at about 4:20 p.m. when she was struck.

Injuries were later determined to be minor, but the wreck closed the intersection of Portland and Main streets for an hour while police began an investigation.

According to a news release from the Fryeburg Police Department, an 18-year-old woman from Bartlett, N.H., was driving west on Portland Street at about 20 mph, when the 23-year-old stepped out in front of her car.

The 23-year-old was still lying in the roadway when emergency crews arrived, police said. She was taken to Memorial Hospital in North Conway, N.H.

Police did not identify the victim or the driver. The crash remained under investigation later Wednesday.

Police said the victim was not in a crosswalk and was wearing dark clothes, which may have contributed to the crash.

“The pedestrian was wearing dark clothing and is extremely fortunate to have only sustained minor injuries,” Police Chief Joshua Potvin said in a news release. “She was approximately 20 feet from a crosswalk when the vehicle struck her. We wish her a speedy recovery.”
