During the early morning hours of 11/12/2015 Sgt. Wayne Clifford received a call in the watch commander’s office from a citizen concerned about the welfare of a skunk. Sgt. Clifford and Sgt. Derek St. Laurent immediately sprang into action and responded to the scene. Sgt. Clifford went above and beyond his call of duty assisting this skunk whose head was stuck inside a glass container. Sgt. St. Laurent was more than happy to assist Sgt. Clifford from inside the cruiser providing Sgt. Clifford with a spot light and some laughs! We are happy to report that the skunk was freed and uninjured. Sgt. Clifford however had to explain to the arriving day watch officers at shift change why the station stinks. Sgt. Clifford was one of two officers sent out early Thursday morning to check the welfare of a skunk that appeared to be in some kind of trouble.
The outcome was rather predictable.
Clifford and Sgt. Derek St. Laurent responded to the call and found the skunk with its head stuck in a glass container, according to the Lewiston Police Facebook page. St. Laurent did his part by shining a spotlight on the scene from a safe distance, police said. Clifford, meanwhile, got up close and personal, attempting to free the skunk from the jar.
His efforts were successful. What he got for his pains was a hefty dose of skunk scent.
According to police, Clifford, a former drug agent, went back to the station and had to explain the unsavory aroma to the shift supervisor. He later went home to sleep, police said — in his garage.
The police Facebook page later in the day was abuzz with comments on Clifford’s adventure.
“Sometimes your job stinks,” one woman wrote, “but we appreciate you!”
