LISBON — Attention vandals: If you have mischief in mind and you’re carrying your cellphone in a pocket, make sure you don’t have 9-1-1 on speed dial.

In Lisbon, an errantly placed call to emergency dispatchers led police to three teens who were first charged with illegally consuming alcohol and, later, with vandalizing a fleet of parked school buses.

It happened on Halloween night when Lisbon police dispatch answered a call. There appeared to be no one on the other end, but the line was open and police were able to track the caller to Capital Avenue.

There, they found three teenagers: Logan Melnik, 18, of Old Orchard Beach; Edwin Hall, 18, of Sanford; and a male juvenile also from Old Orchard Beach.

While talking with the teens, police said, they discovered that the three had been drinking alcohol; each was charged. That appeared to be the end of the consequences for the misplaced “butt dial,” but the night was not over.

An hour-and-a-half after charging the teens, police discovered that several school buses had been vandalized while parked in town. After quizzing the three teens about the damage, police said, the trio admitted they had done the deed.

Police charged them with criminal mischief. Damage to the school buses was estimated at $1,500.

Investigators did not say which of the teens was responsible for the “butt dial” that led to the arrests.
