UPDATE: Texas man charged with six counts of murderWarrant: Texas murder suspect was drinking with Johnson family | Farmington community in shock, mourning over Texas slayings

LEWISTON — A former Farmington man and his adult daughter were among six family members killed Saturday night while camping on the daughter’s recently purchased property near Tennessee Colony, Texas, Anderson County Sheriff Greg Taylor said Monday.

He said it is the largest murder scene he’s ever seen, calling it “shocking.”

According to Carl and Cynthia Johnson’s family, the bodies of Carl Johnson, 77, and his daughter Hannah Johnson were found Sunday morning. Police declined to name the Johnsons, but said two bodies were found at 7 a.m. Sunday after the sole survivor — Cynthia Johnson — was able to make her way to a main road and call 911.

Carl and Cynthia Johnson were employees of the University of Maine at Farmington and retired to Texas. Hannah moved there to be closer to them.

In addition to Carl Johnson and his daughter, Hannah Johnson’s 6-year-old son Kade Johnson, Hannah’s boyfriend Thomas Kamp, and Kamp’s two oldest children were killed, according to the Johnson family.

The bodies of Kamp and the children were found in a pond at 1:15 p.m. Monday after police searched nearby property belonging to William Mitchell Hudson, 33, of County Road 2217.

Hudson has been arrested and charged with one count of murder in the deaths. He is being held on a $2.5 million bond.

At a 15-minute news conference at his office Monday afternoon and streamed live on the local ABC affiliate KLTV, Sheriff Taylor said he expected Hudson would face additional charges.

Police believe Hudson acted alone.

As far as the sheriff was aware, Hudson did not have any relationship with the victims, nor was it clear what prompted the murders. Hudson is not cooperating with police, Taylor said.

The sheriff said Hudson has a previous record of violent behavior, but nothing on the scale of the six murders. “We handled him for assault within the last few weeks,” Taylor said. “He was violent, but it wasn’t of this nature.”

According to the Johnson family, the six were killed Saturday night. KLTV is reporting at least one neighbor heard gunshots and screams from the property Saturday night.

Asked how the victims died, Taylor said police were not sure, but there was a “possible shooting” of the two victims recovered Sunday morning (Carl Johnson and his daughter). As for the other four, Taylor said it was “unclear whether they drowned, or whether they were already demised when they went into the pond. We don’t know.”

The bodies will undergo autopsies to determine cause of death, Taylor said.

According to a friend of the Johnson family, Hannah Johnson and Kamp had recently purchased the property where they were killed and were there for a weekend of camping. Taylor confirmed the property was a recent purchase.

The couple live about 100 miles away from where they were camping, in Midlothian, Texas.

Taylor said the crime scene under investigation includes the Johnson-Kamp property and an additional 50-75 acres of neighboring property, including Hudson’s house and a house that belongs to Hudson’s mother.

According to the Livermore Falls Police Department, Erik Johnson — Carl’s son and the manager of Sandy River Farms in Farmington — left Maine early Monday morning to be with his mother. As of midday Monday, police had not told the family whether Cynthia had been injured, but several members of the Johnson family said Cynthia told her son they were all dead.

At the Monday news conference, Sheriff Taylor said Cynthia Johnson had been slightly injured in the attack, but he declined to provide any more details. She stayed overnight in the county’s crisis center, and spent much of Monday with the district attorney detailing the crime.

According to her Facebook posts, Hannah Johnson was a 1998 graduate of the University of Maine and worked for an insurance claims company in Fort Worth.

Sheriff Taylor said his investigators, along with Palestine police and Texas Rangers, were still at the crime scene near Tennessee Colony late Monday. They blocked the road leading to the Johnson-Kamp property and expected to be at the scene through the day Tuesday.
