LEWISTON — Police said a New Jersey man arrested early Monday during a traffic stop was held without bail on a fugitive from justice warrant for murder.

Juan Porter, 30, appeared in 8th District Court, declined to waive extradition to New Jersey and sought a hearing. Judge Charles Dow scheduled a hearing for Dec. 30.

In the meantime, Dow said Porter would be held without bail.

According to a warrant from Newark, N.J., Porter did, on Feb. 8, “purposely and knowingly cause the death of Sharod Coleman by shooting him.” A warrant was issued March 3.

Porter was barred from having a handgun after a 2007 robbery conviction, prosecutors said.

An affidavit by Sgt. Wayne Clifford said he stopped a car on Lisbon Street that had not switched on its headlights shortly after 3 a.m. Monday. Porter was a passenger; a woman had been driving. Porter identified himself as “Sharif Greene.”

Porter had difficulty spelling his first and last names for Clifford, who confronted him about his odd spelling of both names. Porter then refused to discuss his identity, Clifford wrote.

After Porter was taken to the local police station, officers sent his fingerprints to the FBI, which processed them and determined they were on file in the name of Shamar Porter. The FBI said Porter was wanted by the sheriff’s office in Newark.

Dispatch confirmed that Porter, also known as Juan, was wanted on a murder/homicide warrant, Clifford wrote.

Porter had the name “Juan” tattooed on his neck. Other tattoos also matched the FBI’s description for Shamar Porter. Porter confirmed that was his identity.

He was taken to Androscoggin County Jail and assigned a court-appointed attorney.
