MINOT — Selectmen on Monday directed Town Administrator Arlan Saunders to take action against two property owners who are in apparent violation of state laws regarding the number of unregistered automobiles they have on their properties.
Saunders was asked to meet with Code Enforcement Officer Ken Pratt to make an appointment with the town attorney to draw up letters to Todd Ross of Marston Hill Road and John Varney of Shaw Hill Road. The letters are to inform them that the 60 days they were given to correct the situations have passed and fines and court appearances are in order.
According to Pratt’s email of Sunday, Nov. 22, to Saunders, Ross, who has not made himself available for discussion, had at least four unregistered automobiles on his property as of Friday, Nov. 20.
Varney, Pratt said, understands that he needs to remove several cars from his property. Varney also stated that as the operator of a body shop, he has several piles of old parts that need to be removed, along with tires and other things from the jobs he’s done.
Pratt listed 12 unregistered automobiles on Varney’s property, plus the plow truck that is intended for use on the property.
Pratt said it appears Varney intends to work with the town and removed several cars since receiving the letter from the town giving him the required 60-day notice.
State law allows a property owner to have only two unregistered vehicles on their property.
In other business, selectmen, following a public hearing, approved a liquor license renewal for the Maine Wedding Barn at 418 Center Minot Hill Road and approved a request from No Child Wet Behind for the use of the town’s hiking trails and fields on May 21, 2016, for a 5K run and diaper drive. Officials from the Minot-Hebron Athletic Association have determined that there will be no scheduling conflict.
Saunders told the board that James Belleau of the legal firm of Trafton, Matzen, Belleau and Frenette approached him with a proposal to provide the town with legal services.
Selectmen agreed to seek requests for proposals to provide legal services.
Saunders also told the board he expects to hear soon from Sen. Garret Mason, R-Lisbon Falls, regarding the board’s request to meet with him about events that appear to have altered the Androscoggin County charter following voter approval a full year ago.
Selectman Eda Tripp announced she had prepared 23 Thanksgiving Day baskets for distribution and was already making preparations for Christmas. Donations are welcomed.
Selectman Steve French announced the annual lighting of the town Christmas tree will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 28, in front of the Town Office on Woodman Hill Road. The Minot Fire Department will host the event with coffee and hot chocolate at the Central Station following the carol singing.
