Coach: Doug Gilbert (21st year)
Conference: Mid-State Class: B
Last year’s record: 33-5, Class C state champion
Returning athletes: Seniors — Griffyn Smith (120), Gus Brown (152), Spencer Vaughan (182), Lucas MacDonald (220); Juniors — Hunter White (138), Tucker Barnett (145), Bryce Whittemore (160); Sophomores — Jon Wainwright (126), Colin Woodhead (132), Dalton Berry (195).
Key losses: None.
Promising newcomers: Sophomore — Cam Turner (170); Freshmen — Lucas Waite (106), Wyatt Lufkin (126/132), Nolan DeGroot (170), Avery Bradeen (220).
Outlook: The Cougars aren’t the defending state champion, because the class in which they competed a year ago no longer exists. With the entire team returning and a talented freshman class added to the mix, Dirigo will challenge for top honors in Class B, as well. Four of the returnees won individual state titles a year ago, and six were runners-up. The newcomers should fit into the lineup nicely, allowing the Cougare to cover every weight class. Ellsworth, Foxcroft, Belfast, Mountain Valley, Wells will be the competition at the state level. A rugged regular-season schedule should have the Cougars amply prepared for regionals on Feb. 6.
