LIVERMORE FALLS — Selectmen are interested in sharing fire services with Jay, but time is of the essence, board member Mary Young said at Tuesday’s meeting.
Board of Selectmen Chairwoman Louise Chabot agreed that the town needs to set a deadline for a decision on constructing a new fire station, or how the town should share services with Jay.
“I’m all for regionalization. It has to happen,” she said.
Town Manager Kristal Flagg said that recently, Livermore Falls Selectmen Jeff Bryant and Ron Chadwick met with two Jay selectmen to discuss how the towns could regionalize fire services.
“I believe they’re interested in having more talks on what we can do before they make an initial investment,” she said.
Chadwick said the towns would have to consider what they need and don’t need for equipment, and whether Livermore Falls should have a substation in East Livermore, which is part of Livermore Falls. Flagg said a lack of firefighters is also a problem for the Jay and Livermore Falls fire departments.
“It’s a good time to look at our needs, their needs, and see if we can meet in the middle,” she said.
There was discussion among selectmen about whether it would be beneficial to have a fire station in Jay with equipment and personnel from both towns, and a substation in East Livermore with Livermore Falls equipment and personnel.
The Livermore Falls station is in downtown Livermore Falls, and it was noted at previous meetings that a sizable number of residents live a considerable distance from the station.
Flagg said a site farther south on Route 133 in East Livermore would be more centrally located within the town’s boundaries. Constructing a substation there would help the town’s fire insurance rating because it would be within 5 miles of all Livermore Falls residents, she said.
After a public hearing, selectmen approved a one-year liquor license for the Chuck Wagon Restaurant.
The next selectmen meeting is at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 15.
