BERWICK (AP) — Police say they’ve made an arrest after a driver struck and killed a disabled veteran’s service dog in Maine.
Berwick police charged 23-year-old Jesse Gosselin of Dover, N.H., with leaving the scene of an accident and operating a motor vehicle after his license was suspended.
Police said the 7-year-old German shepherd named Sophia was hit as Brian Drake was collecting his mail Saturday afternoon. Drake wasn’t hurt, and police believe the dog was attempting to protect him. The driver didn’t stop.
Foster’s Daily Democrat reported Monday (http://bit.ly/1SLD41b) police said Gosselin was very remorseful while providing a full confession.
It wasn’t immediately known if he had a lawyer and a phone number could not be found for him.
The Berwick American Legion Post #79 is creating a fund for Drake’s family.
