WEST GARDINER (AP) — A southern Maine town is once again asking for donations to put up welcome signs after vandals stole three signs and damaged a fourth this month.
The Kennebec Journal reported (http://bit.ly/1QiviOF ) West Gardiner first posted welcome signs at the entrances to town about five years ago following a fundraising campaign that covered all costs.
Margaret Peacock, originator of the sign project, says the welcome signs represent both community pride and the town’s welcoming spirit.
The handmade signs cost $450 each. Officials say enough donations have been made to pay for 1 ½ signs.
The stolen signs were posted along Bog Hill Road, Neck Road and Route 126. The damaged sign was located on Hallowell-Litchfield Road.
It’s not known if police have any suspects in the crime.
