RUMFORD — Two local men accused of locking an elderly woman out of her apartment remained in jail Monday, Police Chief Stacy Carter said.

Robert Lemieux, 61, and Andrew Brochu, 22, both of Rumford, were each arrested Friday on a charge of criminal trespass, Carter said. Lemieux was also charged with felony assault on a police officer and a warrant charging failure to appear. Brochu was also charged with violating conditions of release and is being held on a probation violation.

Both were arraigned Friday in court and had bail set at $200 cash. As of Monday night, Brochu remained in the Oxford County Jail in Paris and Lemieux at the Cumberland County Jail in Portland.

According to police, at approximately 7 p.m. Thursday, officers responded to a report of an elderly woman locked out of her apartment by two men.

Rumford Police Sgt. James Bernard said the woman was in a hallway talking with other tenants when the two men came in. He said one of the men claimed to be the building manager and was given access to the woman’s apartment. He immediately slammed the door and locked her out.

The men were strangers to her, he said, and the reason they were in the building is unknown.

Bernard said he got a master key to unlock the apartment door and removed the men from the building. As police were preparing to take them to jail, Lemieux kicked Bernard in the chest and dislocated his finger, Chief Carter said.

Bernard was treated at Rumford Hospital and returned to work, Carter said.

Brochu and Lemieux each have a history of arrests.
