DENMARK — The Denmark Arts Center will hold its first St. Lucia Scandinavian Celebration of Light at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Dec. 18. St. Lucia was adopted by the northern countries of Europe to bring light to the darkest month of the year.

Each December, a young girl is chosen to wear a crown of candles. Hannah Howard of Fryeburg Academy is Denmark’s inaugural wearer of the crown. She will also read an original poem.

The rest of the evening will include refreshments and performances by a hefty roster of local musicians and dancers. Musical renditions from Grimes to Elvis, and “Silver Bells” to “Soulshine,” as well as performances by  Hio Ridge Dance, Junco, Cookie Harrist, Rowan Polen, Charles Linden, Elizabeth Roth, Keri McCollum, Janet Gill and more, will ensure a lively evening.

Traditional Scandinavian treats will be served along with hot cocoa, coffee and good cheer. Feel free to bring drinks, snacks and dinner. Seating is cabaret style.

Tickets are a suggested donation of $10; kids get in free.
