DIXFIELD — A local woman escaped injury Tuesday morning when her vehicle went off Route 2 and into the Androscoggin River, Police Chief Jeff Howe said.
Howe said the driver, whose name was not immediately available, was traveling toward Dixfield in her Subaru Outback when it suddenly turned sideways, went off the road and into the river.
Howe said he suspects a mechanical problem was responsible for the crash. Bob Riley, owner of MT Pockets Towing of Dixfield, said it appeared the ball joint on the driver’s side let go, which caused the car to turn sideways.
Dixfield officer Rusty Daley assisted with the accident.
