SABATTUS — The Board of Selectmen re-elected Mark Duquette as chairman and chose Michelle Ames as vice chairwoman Tuesday evening.

JP Curran and Guy Desjardins attended their first meeting since being elected last month. Curran volunteered to be a representative for Public Works and Desjardins offered to represent the Police Department patrol officers in contract negotiations for Teamsters Local 340.

The board unanimously voted to assign Fire Chief Marc Veilleux as interim emergency management director while they seek a permanent placement.

Curran, a former member of the town’s Ordinance Review Committee, said he is concerned about the lack of progress in prioritizing ordinances and the lack of attendance at meetings.

Town Manager Tony Ward will discuss with department heads which ordinances need the most attention and will report at the next selectmen meeting. Curran will remain on the Ordinance Review Committee in an advisory role.

Ames said she would like to invite businessmen and other community members to join the Ordinance Review Committee, the Appeals Board, Budget Committee and Planning Board. All have vacancies. Information about these opportunities will be posted on the town’s website.

In other news, Ward reported progress in hiring a new patrol officer. A background check, a polygraph test and a physical agility test are pending for a candidate, he said.

He said the town is $130,000 below projected spending because of the lack of snow and ice, the police chief vacancy and careful spending.

There are 44 property owners who have not paid 2014 taxes. Letters will be sent advising them they have 45 days to pay before foreclosure proceedings begin.

The fate of properties at 65 Depot St. and 0 Emily Drive, which were acquired for unpaid taxes, will be determined early in 2016.

The Town Hall will be closed Thursday, Dec. 24, Friday, Dec. 25, and Friday, Jan. 1, 2016.
