UPDATE: Woman struck by vehicle during Freeport flag lady event

FREEPORT (AP) — The Freeport flag ladies are being joined by additional supporters after filing for a protection order against a man whose father died during the 9/11 attacks.

Elaine Greene, JoAnn Miller and Carmen Foote wave flags each Tuesday on Freeport’s Main Street, a tradition started by Greene and Miller since the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

This week, they’re being joined by several groups showing support after they sought a harassment order against the son of a Maine man whose father, Lewiston High School graduate James Roux, died in the 9/11 attacks. The son said previously that the women were exploiting the victims.

Greene said she and the flag ladies promote patriotism, and don’t take sides. They said they support everyone’s right to free speech but don’t want to be harassed.
