AUBURN — Firefighters on Saturday night were investigating the cause of a fire that destroyed a barn on Old Danville Road.

Deputy Chief Geoff Lowe said the fire was reported at 976 Old Danville Road at 7:30 p.m.

“When we got there the barn was fully involved and fire was extending into the home,” he said. “Crews, as soon as they got there, went to work right away and were able to keep it out of the home and stop it in the ell, the portion of the house that connects the barn and house.”

While the barn and its contents are a complete loss, the residential portion of the home will be able to be reoccupied after some repairs, Lowe said in a news release later Saturday night.

The property owner and two tenants residing in the home have been displaced and will be staying with family members, he said. Their names were not available Saturday night.

A horse and several dogs escaped the fire, but two cats remained missing, he said.

No one was injured.

“It started somewhere in the barn; we just don’t know where or what the cause was,” Lowe said just after 9:30 p.m. “We’re bringing in an excavator to take down the barn and dig out some of the remaining pockets of fire. The crews will be on scene for another couple hours just trying to clean up and make sure we get everything out.”

In addition to the Auburn Fire Department, crews responded from Lewiston Fire, Poland Fire, Durham, New Gloucester, Mechanic Falls Fire, Minot Fire, Auburn Public Works and Auburn police, according to Lowe’s release.
