DIXFIELD — The Board of Selectmen voted Monday evening to table a vote on whether to approve a maintenance agreement with the Maine Department of Transportation to replace a traffic signal at Weld Street and Route 2.
Town Manager Carlo Puiia said MDOT is offering to replace the traffic signal using federal money, but in return they want the town to sign a maintenance agreement that would make it responsible for future maintenance.
Chairman Hart Daley asked Puiia if there was anything wrong with the traffic light and Puiia said there is not.
“If our traffic light breaks right now, are we responsible for it?” Selectman Dana Whittemore asked.
Puiia said that it would be the MDOT’s responsibility.
“I’m a little confused as to why we would want to switch at this point if we don’t have any problems,” Whittemore said.
“Well, we know that the states are always trying to shed costs. This may be one of their ways of doing it,” Puiia said.
Resident Norine Clarke said Dixfield should check with Rumford and Mexico and see how they deal with traffic lights.
“I’m wondering if we can get someone from the DOT to come in to one of our meetings and answer some of the questions,” Daley said. “You know the saying, ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it?’ Well, the way I see it, if the light isn’t broken and still works fine, why change it now and become responsible for the maintenance?”
Puiia said he would contact the MDOT and see if they could send someone who is authorized to speak about the traffic light replacement project.
