MEXICO — The town will hold a special election Tuesday, Jan. 5, to fill a vacancy on the Board of Selectmen.

Balloting will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the Calvin P. Lyons Meeting Hall downstairs at the Town Office. Absentee ballots are available until Thursday.

The vacancy was created when Albert Aniel resigned in November. His term expires June 30, 2017.

Jack Gaudet and Peter Merrill took out nomination papers and gathered the necessary 25 valid signatures of registered voters to run for the position.

Gaudet serves on the Budget Committee and is a member of the Mexico Fire Department. Merrill previously served three terms on the Board of Selectmen, having been elected in 2005, 2008 and 2011.

Town Clerk Penny Duguay said voters will also be asked to decide on changes to the Fire Department bylaws.
