TURNER — The Board of Selectmen voted 3-2 Monday night to charge residents $2 each for up to two five-gallon buckets of salt/sand mix from the town’s supply at the Transfer Station.
Tickets will be available at the Town Office. If the system proves unmanageable it may be discontinued, the board agreed.
Selectmen have been wrestling with whether to make sand available to taxpayers. Some members strongly favored doing away with the option entirely because of the cost and people abusing the privilege. Last year, it cost the town $7,200, Town Manager Kurt Schaub said.
Selectman Angelo Terreri said a few “bad apples” should not be allowed to ruin things for everyone.
Chairman Kurt Youland said he liked the idea of attaching a small fee to offset the cost.
Terreri motioned to continue the service for $2 per bucket and Selectman Kevin Nichols seconded it. Voting in favor with them was Denis Richardson; voting against were Youland and Ralph Caldwell.
The board agreed to stripe around the Transfer Station to create a traffic pattern.
Rodney Guptill, who was named fire chief Dec. 7, told the board the fire at the Bisson Transportation warehouse on Route 4 last week had smoke so thick he couldn’t 2 inches in front of him. He said they hauled 20,000 gallons of water to put out the blaze. He said things went well and expressed appreciation for the assistance from area towns.

Turner Rescue Chief Toby Martin said his team received recognition from 2nd District Congressman Bruce Poliquin, R-Maine, for its successful resuscitation on Christine Letourneau on Nov. 6, 2015.
