PARIS — Paris Hill Road was reopened at about 11 p.m. Tuesday, about five hours after a water main break near Cornwall Nature Preserve sent thousands of gallons of water down the road.

The break caused low-water pressure for Paris Hill residents.

Paris Utility District Office Manager Penny Lowe said most of the 36,000 gallons of water lost ran down the road. Paris police noticed it and reported the break at about 6 p.m. Tuesday, she said. The road was closed and traffic detoured while crews excavated the 8-inch pipe and located the break.

The likely reason for the break, Lowe said, was movement in the road because of frost and traffic that caused a rock the pipe was resting on to crack the pipe.

Wayne Kennagh Excavating assisted a crew of four from the utility district in repairing the break. Two other Paris Utility District employees manned the office to field phone calls from residents. Lowe said nobody lost water completely and water service was back to normal by about 10 p.m.
