NORWAY — The Board of Selectmen set a special town meeting for Jan. 21 to approve $214,000 to replace the boiler and repair the air conditioning system at the Town Office.
The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. in the Town Office on Danforth Street.
General Assistance Administrator Shannon Moxcey told selectmen of a mandated increase in the General Assistance maximums.
Officials have said that since Moxcey was hired about four years ago she has substantially reduced the General Assistance budget.
Town Manager David Holt said, and selectmen agreed, that the town should try to provide her with a full-time job with benefits to assure she will remain in the position. The other six towns she works for part time would be asked to contribute to her salary.
Selectmen approved the appointment of John Lewis of Woodstock as a full-time officer with the Police Department. Lewis is a lifelong resident of the area, a graduate of Telstar Regional High School in Bethel, a Marine Corps reservist with service in Afghanistan and a former part-time member of the Maine Warden Service and Oxford Police Department.
“Now I’m excited to be working here,” Lewis told the board. He was introduced by Police Chief Rob Federico and accompanied by his wife, children and parents.
In other business, a public hearing will be scheduled to determine if a structure on Town Farm Road is dangerous and dilapidated. The owner, who lives in Madison, N.H., did not complete cleanup of the site as requested by Code Enforcement Officer Joelle Corey-Whitman. The owner was informed that the matter would be taken to the board if not resolved.
The board has also agreed to rebid a property at 30 Dean Ave., after the high bidder of $5,000 withdrew his offer. The town took the property for unpaid taxes and sewer fees, but the owner had to be evicted through a legal process that cost the town about $2,200.
The previous bidder will be notified of the new bid process, Holt said. The property is on a buildable lot with town water and sewer.
