PORTLAND — Portland Stage will present “The Hound of the Baskervilles,” a wacky adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic story, from Jan. 26 to Feb. 21 at the theater, 25A Forest Ave.

The minds behind the production are none other than the creators of Peepolykus, a premiere comedic theater company in the United Kingdom. Touring extensively, they bring their own brand of clowning, slap-stick, witty banter, and self-aware style to their productions. The script was penned largely consolidating their improvisation and penchant for wacky characters.

Three actors portray 12 characters that are caught up in the mystery of the diabolical hound that has recently scared the owner of the estate to death. Sherlock and Watson are assigned the case and journey up to the spooky marshes.

This send-up begins in signature Holmesian style: Sir Charles Baskerville meets a mysterious bloodthirsty hound and also his untimely death. One of the actors rushes the stage to make a last-minute announcement about the possible dangers that await faint of heart audience members.

Next, the audience is whisked off to Baker Street to meet Holmes and Watson. The two exchange banter when suddenly a mysterious stranger enters and informs the detective team of the Legend of the Curse of the Baskervilles. Legend has it that due to a lusty ancestor, every subsequent Baskerville to cross the moor of their estate at night will meet their death at the paws of a deadly hound.

The team accepts the case, visits the moor and eventually the Baskerville estate. Eventually, Sherlock deduces who is responsible for the murders and unravels the mystery with the aid of some old portraits.
