DURHAM — State police identified the man found dead at a Durham recreational area Tuesday as 43-year-old Alan Kelley of Durham, who most recently had been living at a Lewiston homeless shelter.

There is no immediate indication of foul play, but the state Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct toxicology tests before issuing the results of the autopsy, police said.

Detectives said a hypodermic needle was found in Kelley’s clothing and they were trying to determine how and when Kelley arrived at the Runaround Pond recreational area, because he had no car. He also was not dressed for subfreezing temperatures, police said.

Investigators said Kelley was estranged from his wife and children, who live about five miles away from where his body was found.

Kelley has a minor criminal record in the area. In early January 2015, he was arrested in Auburn on a charge of sale and use of drug paraphernalia and on a warrant charging failure to pay a fine on a charge of misuse of identification.
