AUBURN — A Lewiston man who admitted his role in a 2014 drug-related home invasion in Poland was sentenced Friday to eight years in prison with nearly all of it suspended.

Lee Brown, 50, of 45 Lewiston St. spent six days in Androscoggin County Jail before making bail. He was credited Friday for that time.

Conditions of his three-year probation include: no use or possession of illegal drugs, for which he would be subject to random search and testing; substance abuse counseling; a 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew; a residence approved by his probation officer, and no contact with his co-defendants or with the victims.

Brown was one of five people indicted last year in a home invasion in Poland that was first believed to be motivated by money, but was later determined to be a drug robbery, Assistant District Attorney Andrew Matulis said in Androscoggin County Superior Court.

Brown was indicted by an Androscoggin County grand jury in March 2015 on a Class A robbery charge, punishable by up to 30 years in prison. He pleaded guilty on Friday to a Class B charge of robbery, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.

Supreme Court Justice Donald Alexander, who presided over the Superior Court hearing, heard from Matulis the evidence he would have presented, had the case gone to trial.

Matulis said Brown and four others entered the Poland home of Timothy Page and his son, Tyler, in December 2014.

Timothy Page told police that one of the defendants, Shawna Wilson, 38, of Mechanic Falls, had called him earlier to ask him for money.

Wilson showed up at Page’s home with three men who were armed with baseball bats and a hammer, Matulis said. They threatened to harm the Pages. One of the men struck Tyler Page on the eye with a hammer, causing a laceration.

Brown had initially denied any involvement in the robbery, but later said he had been drinking with his co-defendants before the incident, and went with them to the Page home, Matulis said.

His co-defendants told police that they had gone to the Page home to get heroin and that they took a finger (about 10 grams) of the drug from Tyler Page, Matulis said.

Wilson had told Brown and other co-defendants that she had been “ripped off” before, and didn’t intend to have that happen again, Matulis said.

The heroin was later divided among the co-defendants, Matulis said.

Matulis said his office would not choose to call the victims to the witness stand and give them immunity from prosecution in exchange for their testimony at trial.

“Therefore, we took the opportunity to sit down with Mr. Brown and go over the events of that night and get a better idea of … who was involved and what actually occurred,” Matulis said.

Brown has “very significant medical conditions,” Matulis said, including cirrhosis of the liver and chronic hepatitis C.

“He is on numerous medications,” Mautlis said. Brown “would be a pretty significant burden on the prison system,” he said.

The agreement allows Brown to receive ongoing treatment for his drug addiction, Matulis said.

Brown may appeal his conviction and sentence.

The cases of three co-defendants, Wilson, Diana Driscoll-Connolly, 40, of Mechanic Falls and Terry Small, 48, of Mechanic Falls, are pending trial. One co-defendant is deceased. A sixth co-defendant, Christian Bove of Lewiston, who hadn’t been involved in the home invasion, pleaded guilty in December to a Class C felony of unlawful possession. She will be allowed to withdraw her plea in a year if she abides by the conditions of her deferred disposition.
