JAY — Regional School Unit 73 has announced upcoming events the week of Jan. 18-23.

Martin Luther King Jr. holiday

There will be no school Monday, Jan. 18, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Midterm exams

Midterm exams for Spruce Mountain High School will be held Tuesday through Friday, Jan. 19 to 22.

There will be two exams each day. Students with signed parent permission may leave after exams. Students who do not have permission to leave will report to either the cafeteria or the library for a quiet study hall. Buses will run their regular schedules at the end of the day.

Let’s Duct Tape Mr. Plourde To The Wall

The Jobs for Maine Graduates is sponsoring Let’s Duct Tape Mr. Plourde To The Wall to raise money for an orphanage for girls in Zimbabwe, Africa, in a statewide contest for Jobs for Maine Graduates.

These girls are orphaned due to AIDS and live on the streets, which means they do not receive any education and are vulnerable to abuse. All proceeds will go directly to funding to build a home for the girls.

Classes are competing against each other for Phoenix Olympics points and for the right to put a pie in Mr. Plourde’s face. Every $10 in each class’ jar buys a roll of duct tape. Extra pies can be purchased to throw in Mr. Plourde’s face for $25.

Seniors and college

Seniors who have been accepted to college are asked to bring in a copy of their acceptance letter to the guidance office. Seniors should file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid form as soon as possible. Those who need help with the form may contact the guidance office.

Monday, Jan. 18: KVAC Cheering Competition at the Augusta Civic Center.

Tuesday, Jan. 19: boys’ and girls’ varsity basketball at home vs. Lincoln Academy. Girls play at 5 p.m., boys play at 6:30 p.m.

Wednesday, Jan. 20: Nordic ski meet at Oxford Hills at 3 p.m.

Thursday, Jan. 21: Alpine ski meet GS at Mt. Abram at 4:30 p.m.

Friday, Jan. 22: Alpine ski meet at Titcomb Mountain at 4 p.m.; Girls’ junior varsity/varsity basketball at home vs. Maranacook. Junior varsity plays at 5 p.m., varsity at 6:30 p.m.; Boys’ junior varsity/varsity basketball at Maranacook. JV plays at 5 p.m., varsity plays at 6:30 p.m.

Saturday, Jan. 23: Nordic ski meet at Oxford Hills at 10 a.m.
